During the Second World War, with Italy divided by the "Gothic Line", the Federcalcio moved its headquarters to Milan and organized a "mixed national division championship". The tournament was divided into zonal groups, organized in three regional stages and the winners went to the final for the title of Champion of Italy. Spezia was included in Group D of the Emilia sector. The club was in a serious crisis at the time: president Perioli had been captured and sent to a concentration camp in Germany. Semorile, the only executive left, decided to contact the commander of the Fire Brigade of La Spezia, Eng. Gandino, to set up a team capable of facing the High Italy Championship. The team then took the new name "VV.F. Spezia", and was hired as coach Ottavio Barbieri, player of the National team. Many of the successes came thanks to the revolutionary "half-system" introduced by Barbieri (with the insertion of the "sweeper").
The team faced the transfers on an old tanker modified to transport them, always under the risk of bombings. "VV.F. Spezia" won its round with 13 points, ahead of Suzzara, Fidenza, Parma, and Busseto in the standings. In round B of the semifinals, the team won over Carpi, Suzzara, and Modena and Spezia was included in a group of four teams for the qualification to the final round. However, "VVF Spezia" faced only Bologna, because of the renouncement of Montecatini and Lucchese. In the first match, in Bologna, Spezia went ahead thanks to a goal spoiled perhaps by an offside. The protests of the locals led to the suspension of the race, with the victory of Spezia for 0 - 2 and Bologna that defected the return race. Therefore Aquilotti arrived in the final round together with Venice and Turin, the Great Turin of Vittorio Pozzo, defending champion of Italy.
On July 9th, 1944 they began the finals: the draw between Spezia and Venezia for 1-1 seemed to pave the way for Torino’s reconquest of the title; a week after, on July 16th, Spezia beat instead of the favorites Granata for 2 - 1, with a brace of Angelini and the momentary draw of Piola, subverting every prediction.
The match was played in a semi-deserted Milan Arena for fear of German attacks. The Ligurian team played with this line-up: Bani, Borrini, Amenta, Gramaglia, Persia, Scarpato, Tommaseo, Rostagno, Costa, Tori, Angelini. On July 20th, Torino defeated Venezia 5-2, defining the victory of Spezia. On July 17th, right after Spezia's victory that excluded Torino from the race for the title, the Federcalcio issued a statement in which it declared, in contradiction to what had been arranged at the beginning of that tournament, that the first place team would be awarded the "Coppa Federale del Campionato di Guerra" (Federal Cup of the war championship) and not the regular Championship. On August 8th, at the end of the championship, a further statement from the Federcalcio announced that the title of Italian champion would remain with Torino (title holder) and Spezia would be awarded the Federal Cup. The recognition of the honorary sporting title for the victory of the 1943-44 Championship by the FIGC, however, arrived only on January 22nd, 2002 thanks to the work of journalists and local authorities.
