2019/2020 – Landing in paradise

2019/2020 – Landing in paradise

After the disappointment for the elimination from the play-off, in summer Guido Angelozzi entrusted the bench to Vincenzo Italiano. Spezia was forced to say goodbye to the two jewels Okereke and Augello, as well as the extreme defender Lamanna. In entrance, Scuffet, Marchizza, Federico Ricci, Ragusa and Ferrer arrived in the club. The beginning of the season, however, was not of the best and after 7 days the Aquile occupied the red zone of the standings.

The turning point came on October 19th, in Pescara: that day, Bartolomei and Gudjohnsen beat the "Adriatic" and for Spezia was like starting a new season, made of victories and great successes. From there until the end of the first half of the season, the Aquile cashed only one defeat (very unlucky, in Pisa), starting to climb the standings, ending up in the play-off zone. At the end of the year, it was possible to perceive that there were possibilities to make the big jump, and the club, during the winter market session, reinforced the team, buying Nzola from Trapani and two of the maximum "experts" of promotions in Serie A: Di Gaudio and Vitale, both from Verona.

The second half of the season opened as it ended the first half: under in name of victory. Spezia gained ground, with 13 consecutive positive results, and fought for second place with Crotone. Then followed the abrupt stop to the championship due to the pandemic from Covid-19 and from March until June the teams stopped.

The championship started again in late June when Spezia at home overcame Empoli thanks to a goal by Ragusa. Then followed the victory of the "Bentegodi" against Chievo, won by an overflowing Galabinov, author on that occasion of a hat-trick. But in the last 8 days, the Aquile's trend seemed to accuse a decrease, in which victories alternated with false steps. Anyway, by the success of Salerno on the last day, Spezia closed the championship in 3rd place with 61 points (the record for Spezia in Serie B). In the semifinal play-off, Spezia met  Chievo of mister Aglietti and in the first match, at the "Bentegodi", the Aquile collected a heavy defeat for 2-0 due to the goals of Dordevic and Segre in the very first minutes of the match. At the return match, however, it was a different story: Italiano chose Galabinov in attack, who at the first touched ball scored the header goal of the advantage, which exploded the enthusiasm of  Spezia fans who came out of the stadium. The second goal arrived at the 50th minute, with Giulio Maggiore, who beat Semper with his left shot under the crossbar. A little later, the third goal came by Nzola, and then Leverbe responded in the last minutes of the match, but his goal wasn’t enough.

Spezia then, by the best placement in the regular season, accessed its first historic play-off final of Serie B. The other finalist was Frosinone of mister Nesta. In the first match, Spezia succeeded to impose for 1-0, thanks to the eighth goal of the season of Gyasi after a splendid assist of Maggiore. On August 20th, in the return match at the "Alberto Picco" stadium, the Aquile suffered the response of Frosinone which, in a hard-fought match, went ahead in the 63 minute with Rohden. In the last action of the game, the Spezia player Luca Vignali saved a goal. The triple whistle arrived and the party started: Spezia, thanks to the best placement in the league, became the third newly promoted team of the 2019/20 season, winning for the first time in its history the legendary promotion to Serie A.
