On August 2nd, 2008, to give continuity to the football tradition of the city of La Spezia, the Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Spezia Calcio 2008 was founded. In the constitutive phase, the association was chaired by the Mayor of the city Massimo Federici, as vice-president the vice-mayor Maurizio Graziano and as founding members four councilors of different political positions: Giacomo Gatti, Vice President of the City Council and exponent of AN-PDL, Paolo Asti, leader of Forza Italia, Giulio Guerri, PD, President of the Sports Commission of the City and Massimo Lombardi, representative of Rifondazione Comunista. Among the first acts of the new company was the request for affiliation to the National Amateur League, supported by the sporting merits ideally inherited from the previous company and by the number of fans.
On August 12th, 2008, after the transformation into a limited liability company, Spezia Calcio 2008 was purchased by Gabriele Volpi, already known in the sports world as the owner of Pro Recco, one of the most important water polo teams in the world. Aldo Jacopetti was appointed as sole administrator. For the role of coach was chosen the former Sampdoria player Marco Rossi, who had already coached in Serie C1 with Lumezzane and Pro Patria. On August 22nd came the official decision: Spezia was admitted to the championship Serie D, group A.
In the presentation ceremony to the city, Volpi and Jacopetti illustrated the program: 5 years to return to the First Division. On September 25th, 2008, the trademark was repurchased by Spezia Calcio 1906. During the season, the attachment to the shirt of La Spezia people, the love for those colors, the will to win, gave a strong acceleration: the first objective was the return of the professional in the team, as evidenced by the purchase campaign carried out by the sole director Jacopetti with the sporting director Osvaldo Olivari. Players from professional categories were purchased, along with some promising young players from the old youth sector. The start of Spezia is incredible: 1-0 in the home of Savona and 2-0 against Albese in front of more than 4000 spectators. The rest of the championship, however, was more difficult than expected, even for the presence of an unstoppable Biellese. During the market, the team was further strengthened with Capuano and Lazzaro, from Rivoli, and Ondrej Herzan, Czech midfielder, already in the ranks of Spezia in Serie B. Despite the excellent path of the whites, who closed the season with 78 points, Biellese won the round with 82 points, forcing the Aquile to play off. The path of the men of coach Rossi, after having eliminated Albese and Casale, was interrupted in the national group stage: after having defeated Fano for 3-0 at Picco, the whites needed only a draw on the insidious field of Massaquano, the stadium of Vico Equense, for passing the turn. On a very hot day, with more than 200 fans coming from Liguria, Spezia lost for 2-0, and could not pass the turn. But it wasn’t enough: Biellese, the authentic dominator of the championship, announced that it didn’t intend to enroll in the Second Division tournament. That summer was illogical, including appeals, guarantees, and applications for repechage, Spezia Calcio, got, on July 30th, 2009, the admission to the Second Division as repechage.
